Wholewheat Eggless Fudge Brownies with Apple Sauce and Flax Seeds

Here is my healthy take on eggless fudge brownies.

I simply cannot resist chocolate! So much is my love {read addiction} for chocolate that I don’t prefer stocking them at home because if I have them at home, they are going to be finished in no time.

And no, I cannot have them in moderation. I wish I could resist the temptation.

For a chocolate lover like me, it is no surprise that brownies are among my favourite desserts. With Valentine’s Day around the corner, brownies are on my mind again.

I have tried a number of brownies over all these years and have realized that adding chocolate to it takes the taste and texture to the next level. In all my attempts to make delicious brownies, I have always tried to make them as healthy as possible without compromising on the taste (of course).

The eggless fudge brownies recipe I am sharing today has a lot of healthy ingredients. I have replaced maida with whole wheat flour/ atta, white sugar with brown sugar, butter with oil, and since it is eggless, I am using applesauce and flax seeds as a replacement to eggs. The chocolate and cocoa in this brownie quite successfully mask any flavour of the whole wheat flour.

It is not really very light in calories but is definitely relatively healthier. So, it surely lessens the guilt of having a brownie for dessert in dinner for 2 days straight.

P.S: If you make a batch of these eggless fudge brownies, do not indulge in them alone. Share them with your friends, neighbours, or co-workers. eggless fudge brownies apple sauce flax seeds

Wholewheat Eggless Fudge Brownies with Apple Sauce and Flax Seeds

1 cup whole-wheat flour/atta

¼ cup cocoa

75 g dark chocolate, chopped

2 tsp baking powder

A pinch of salt

2 tbsp ground flax seeds + ½ cup of water

½ cup applesauce

½ cup brown sugar (can add another ¼ cup, if you want it sweeter)

6 tbsp oil

1 cup water

Handful of chopped walnuts

  1. In a bowl add the ground flax seeds and water and using a whisk start whipping it till you get a frothy white mixture. It will take about 3-4 minutes.
  2. Preheat the oven to 180 C. Line an 8X8 inch brownie tin with parchment paper.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, sift whole wheat flour, cocoa, baking powder and salt. Mix it thoroughly.
  4. In another medium microwave-safe bowl, add the chopped chocolate and microwave it for 1 minute. Take it out and stir it to get smooth melted chocolate. Into it add oil and stir well. Add brown sugar, flax seeds mixture, applesauce and stir well. Add water in batches and keep stirring.
  5. Now add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and whisk for one final time till you get a smooth brownie batter.
  6. Tip the batter into the prepared tin. Tap the tin to even the batter and sprinkle the chopped walnuts. Bake it in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes.
  7. When done take it out and let it cool down before you take it out of the tin. It is better to let it cool for half a day or overnight if you want to get neat slices.
  8. Enjoy it with a cup of coffee or serve it slightly warm with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream for a decadent dessert.

Eggless Sweet Potato Fudge Brownies | A Decadent But Healthy Brownie Recipe

  1. I have used whole wheat flour for making these brownies. If you are not keen on using it try half maida and half wholewheat flour.
  2. I have used unsweetened homemade applesauce in this recipe. You can use store bought also.

  1. Wow! For a chocoholic like me, this recipe – the healthier version of the original – comes like a blessing in disguise! I made brownies using maida once, but after I began making cookies using more of whole wheat flour, I wanted to try making brownies and cakes using the same! Thank you so much, for this recipe as well as for joining the party at #flavoursometuesdays, Jyoti! I am definitely trying this recipe and will share with you the pictures. So excited about it already!
Wish I could just reach over and grab a handful through the computer screen! 🙂
