 Life Lessons from Flowers

There is something about flowers that attract all of us. Their beauty soothes our senses, their colour and vibrant hues add a note of freshness to our lives. Their company uplifts our mood when we are feeling down.

Flowers make me very happy. I feel a certain delight when I am in their company and I can’t describe the feeling in words. I recently visited the Empress Botanical Garden in Pune to enjoy the Annual Flower Show. It was such an amazing experience. Colourful, bright-hued flowers were truly a feast for the eyes and soul. A visit there also aroused the philosopher in me and made me ponder over some lessons that flowers teach us.

Everything in nature has something to teach us. We just have to be open to receive the knowledge and wisdom. Here are some life lessons from flowers.

Spread Happiness:

Flowers spread happiness in the world with their presence. It gives us a reason to smile. But, what does a flower gain in the process? Think about it.

There is nothing more fulfilling than being the reason for a smile on someone else’s face. But to achieve that, our own heart must be filled with joy and love. Becoming a source of joy to others will become effortless then.

Beauty is Temporary:

A flower however beautiful it may be will eventually wither and fade away. A flower is symbolic of the bitter fact that physical beauty is temporary. But instead of cribbing about it, a flower lives in the moment and spread smiles and cheer to others, as long as it lives. Similarly, our physical beauty and charm are temporary. So, instead of being vain about it, we should accept life’s ephemeral nature and make the best out of it by spreading joy and cheer to as many people’s lives as possible.

Treat Everyone Equally:

A flower never discriminates; it treats everyone equally with love and compassion. It shares its beauty with everyone – whether someone is rich or poor, what is his caste and creed doesn’t make any difference. Flowers spread their charm unconditionally. Anyone who embraces them with open arms experiences their affection and sweetness. This lesson from flowers is definitely worth emulating.

Despite the Difficulties, a Flower Still Blooms:

You should have noticed some flowers grow anywhere – in the creeks on the rock, in the crevices of an old wall – just give them some sunshine and water and they are ready to defeat the circumstances and bloom. A rose smile amidst thorns, a lotus grows in dirty water. This symbolizes that difficulties are a part and parcel of life; so they shouldn’t stop you from living your life to the fullest.

Be Amidst People who Help You Blossom:

Positive, nurturing and conducive environment enhances the growth of flowers. While a flower doesn’t have a say or the liberty to choose its surroundings, we humans have. So, we should try to surround ourselves with positive and encouraging people who help us in our journey to blossom.

Flowers always make people better, happier and more helpful; they are sunshine, food and medicine to the soul. ~ Luther Burbank

  1. I agree that flowers can bring us joy in many ways. I got through a very hard winter some years ago by reading a seed catalogue, daily, dreaming about what flowers I’d be growing in the spring. It gave me hope, at a time when I was otherwise struggling.

  2. Beautiful picture. Nature teaches us so much and flowers always make me happy.
